Orange Outlast Irish, Avoid Upset
Tonight at the Carrier Dome, it was the Trevor Cooney show. The sophomore shooting guard finished with a career-high 33 points. Cooney tied James Southerland, Andy Rautins, and Gerry McNamara's school record with 9 three pointers in the game. Trevor had 17 points in the first half, on 5 three's. Along with his 33 points, he had 4 steals. Tyler Ennis, CJ Fair, and Jerami Grant never got going offensively. The 3 combined for 21 points, on 7-26 shooting. Ennis, however, contributed with 8 assists.
On what seemed like a trap game, SU took a 31-18 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Irish came fighting back, closing the deficit to 3 late in the second half. Cooney continued to hit shots, and carried the Orange all night long. Defensively, the Orange were solid. Holding the Irish to 18 first half points.
The 61-55 win was SU's first game since being ranked No. 1. Syracuse improved to 22-0, 9-0 in ACC play.
The Orange will get a much needed break. Everyone needs rest, and that's exactly what they'll get. Syracuse is off until next Sunday, when they will host the Clemson Tigers. Tip off is set for 6:00pm ET on ESPNU.
